1) What is InhalerSelect used for?
The InhalerSelect tool allows users to filter and compare inhalation devices by indication, pharmacological class, active ingredient, and device type. The tool provides quick access to available options, including images, dosages, and approved indications. Its aim is to support clinical decision-making and the selection of the most appropriate device for the patient, without replacing clinical assessment or consultation of the Summary of Product Characteristics (SmPC).
2) Does InhalerSelect recommend a specific inhaler?
No. InhalerSelect is a consultation, filtering, and comparison tool. The final choice should take into account the therapeutic indication, inspiratory capacity, coordination, manual dexterity, inhaler technique, patient preferences, accessibility, and clinical context. The tool does not provide a diagnosis and does not replace clinical guidelines, the SmPC, or shared decision-making with the patient.
3) What is the practical difference between a DPI and a pressurised inhaler (pMDI)?
DPIs (dry powder inhalers) depend on the patient’s ability to generate an adequate inspiratory flow, generally through a rapid and deep inhalation. pMDIs (pressurised metered-dose inhalers) require a slow and deep inhalation coordinated with actuation of the device. For this reason, inspiratory capacity and inhaler technique are important factors when selecting a device.
4) What does coordination between actuation and inhalation mean?
It refers to the patient’s ability to synchronise actuation of the inhaler with the start of an appropriate inhalation. This coordination is particularly important with pMDIs. When correct technique is difficult to achieve, the use of a spacer or a device that is less dependent on this coordination may be considered.
5) When can a spacer be useful?
A spacer is used with pressurised inhalers (pMDIs) and reduces the need for precise synchronisation between actuation and inhalation. It can facilitate effective inhaler technique in children, older adults, and other patients with coordination difficulties. Its indication and method of use should be adapted to the device and clinical context.
6) Why do some inhalers appear for asthma, others for COPD, and others for both?
The indication shown corresponds to the approved indications for each medicine, pharmacological combination, device, and presentation. Not all molecules, combinations, or dosages are authorised for both conditions, and differences may exist between brands and presentations. The indication should be confirmed in the corresponding SmPC.
7) Are doses directly comparable between different devices?
Not always. The nominal dose, formulation, and device characteristics can influence the amount of medicine delivered and pulmonary deposition. Therefore, dose equivalence should not be assumed solely on the basis of the microgram value shown. Any change in medicine or device should be confirmed according to the SmPC and applicable therapeutic recommendations.
8) How can I use InhalerSelect quickly during a consultation?
You can start with the indication (asthma or COPD), select the desired pharmacological class, and then refine the results by active ingredient and device type. It is also possible to start the search using any of these criteria.
